The Band Wagon: One Of The Finest Musicals Ever Made

Musical cinema to make your head and soul ring!

The Band Wagon Cert U 1h 52min 7pm Eldon Building Screening Room 1.10 Wednesday 29 January

A joy ride through the colourful spectacular of Fred Astaire’s washed up star Tony Hunter making the comeback of a lifetime in a light musical reinterpretation of Faust. While not as happy-go-lucky as its contemporary Singin’ In The Rain, Tony Hunter’s story is one of cheek, satire and marvellous wit, seeing as he must move past his insecurities and failures if he’s to deliver an outstanding show.

Just as spectacular is Cyd Charisse’s talented but bashful Gaby Gerrard who constantly engages in rapid-fire back and forths of sarcastic repartee with Astaire’s Hunter, as she too must shake herself out of past dissatisfactions in order to collaborate successfully. The two sing and dance their troubles away as artists seizing the magic and charm of their craft and infusing it back into their wild creative endeavour. This nuanced celebration of lavish musical numbers, polished banter and classical romance is one of the best there is!

Band Wagon is basically the musical Birdman of 1953 with a never-better Fred Astaire” – Lou Lumenick, The New York Post

“…this literate and witty combination herein delivers a show that respectfully bids for recognition as one of the best musical films ever made.” – Bosley Crowther, The New York Times
