Social
Working with ethnically and socially diverse groups in the Portsmouth area, using films to promote cooperation, understanding and acceptance of “cultural diversity” through education and discussion, not merely entertainment.
Individual
We expect positive individual outcomes in terms of community engagement and well-being by helping to tackle isolation in our social life.
Cultural
PFS aims to enhance momentum for Portsmouth’s continued progression as a cultural destination, by supporting the development of a culturally diverse community interested in the arts and willing to support each other to participate and develop the program.
Economic
By providing affordable services, we are supporting the area as a destination, as well as providing employment opportunities to the local community.
Mission Statement
To use English Language and International Film as a medium to support the development of Local: Culture, Art, Community, Education and Encourage Both Film , Arts and Diversity Appreciation.
PFS Aims and Objectives
- To encourage interest in film as a medium for public education, information and entertainment by means of the exhibition of films of artistic, cultural or informative character.
- To advance the education of the public in the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of film and fine arts.
- To promote the study and appreciation of film by such means as presentations, lectures, discussions and art exhibitions.
- To bring people together to share experiences. We aim for uniting different cultures and art forms and breaking down social barriers.
- To celebrate the diversity in community and show films for BME and LGBTQ+ groups in the community.
What we Believe in PFS
Our mission is great art and culture for everyone – we can only achieve this if we make a commitment to promoting and embedding diversity throughout the work we fund and support. We call this the ‘Creative Case for Diversity’. Arts Council EnglandPower through diversity. Investing in diversity.
Diversity and equality are crucial to the arts because they sustain, refresh, replenish and release true potential of our artistic talent – from every background. England’s diverse nature offers unique opportunities for artistic collaborations and innovation. Portsmouth Film Society is a non-profit community interest company run by volunteers which aim to use English and International film as a medium to support the development of Local Culture, Community & Education by encouraging general Public participation and raising awareness & understanding through the medium of specialised film. We aim to unite different cultures and races within our local community by breaking down social barriers and promoting inclusivity.
To celebrate the diversity in community and support for any Ethnic groups. We achieve this by committing to and promoting diversity throughout the work we fund and support. We call this the ‘Creative Case for Diversity’. We have engaged with our Communities and local arts at varying age ranges with projects such as Sunset Cinema outdoor cinema, art exhibitions and other Community filmmaking and fine art projects.
