SOUTHSEA CINEMA: ART OF ACTION

AUTUMN SEASON

ART OF ACTION TAKES OVER PORTSMOUTH FILM SOCIETY!

Portsmouth Film Society is thrilled to announce the  ‘Art of Action’ season—a dynamic celebration of action cinema that aims to ignite a passion for the genre among young film fans aged 16-25. This carefully curated series will guide audiences through the rich history and diversity of action films, offering a fresh appreciation for the movies, the stars, and the incredible talent behind them.

A Journey Through Action Cinema!

Rather than presenting a disconnected array of action films, the  ‘Art of Action’  season is structured to highlight different eras and styles each month, ensuring that audiences walk away with a deeper understanding and curiosity for the genre as a whole. This thoughtful approach allows us to showcase iconic films while also shining a spotlight on lesser-known gems that deserve recognition.

The season kicks off in October with the classic ‘The Wild Bunch’, followed by an insightful talk with Chris Martin. Throughout the season, we’ll feature a diverse lineup of films that not only entertain but also provoke conversation, with each screening accompanied by a guest speaker to deepen the experience.

From the jaw-dropping choreography of  ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’, featuring the incredible talents of Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi, to the cult favorite  ‘Streets of Fire’ introduced by Dave Allen, this season promises a thrilling ride through the action genre’s most celebrated and innovative moments.

Mark Your Calendars please!

– The Wild Bunch – Sun 6th Oct, 6pm | Intro talk by Chris Martin

The Wild Bunch (1969) tells the gripping story of a gang of aging outlaws facing the twilight of the Wild West. As they plan one final heist before leaving behind a way of life that is rapidly disappearing, the situation spirals into a brutal game of betrayal and survival. This iconic film captures the end of an era with raw intensity and unforgettable characters. – Kung Fu Hustle – Wed 16th Oct, 7pm | Intro talk by Aysegul Epengin.

Kung Fu Hustle (2004) is a masterful blend of comedy and action, turning a classic tale of good versus evil into a riotous spectacle. The film uses slapstick humor and clever gags without sacrificing the fast-paced, well-choreographed action scenes that define the genre. Get ready for a wild ride filled with laughter and martial arts mayhem.

– Streets of Fire – Sun 17th Nov, 6pm | Intro talk by Dave Allen

Willem Dafoe stars as the menacing Raven in Streets of Fire (1984), a rock-and-roll fable that’s as stylish as it is thrilling. After a gang of crazed bikers kidnaps rock singer Ellen Aim, her mercenary ex-lover, Tom Cody, embarks on a relentless hunt to rescue her. This film, part of our collaboration with the British Film Institute, combines a gritty narrative with a pulsating soundtrack for an unforgettable cinematic experience.- Run Lola Run – Thur 21st Nov, 7pm

The German film Run Lola Run (1998) reimagines the crime thriller with its innovative storytelling. The plot follows Lola as she races against time to secure money for a mobster, exploring three different outcomes in a high-energy, fast-paced narrative. The film’s experimental approach extends beyond its plot, using creative visuals, including animated sequences, to enhance its frantic and suspenseful atmosphere.

– Yes, Madam!– Sat 30th Nov, 7pm (Free tickets for women)

Yes, Madam! (1985), also known as Police Assassins, is a Hong Kong action classic that delivers non-stop excitement. The film features breathtaking stunt sequences, including a high-speed chase through the streets of Hong Kong and a climactic showdown that will leave you on the edge of your seat. The precision and timing of the action scenes are truly remarkable. Plus, free tickets are available for women! (Request it from cinema box office)

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – Sun 1st Dec, 6pm | Martial Arts demonstration

Experience the legendary Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) in all its glory. Set in 19th century Qing Dynasty China, the story follows a warrior (Chow Yun-Fat) who entrusts his sword, Green Destiny, to his lover (Michelle Yeoh) for safekeeping, only for it to be stolen. The quest to recover the sword leads to the House of Yu, where the tale takes unexpected turns. Renowned for its breathtaking fight choreography and elegant direction, this film is a true masterpiece of martial arts cinema.

    Documentary.

At Knepp Castle in Sussex, conservation pioneers Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell abandoned industrial farming practices and allowed nature to ‘rewild’ their 3,500-acre estate with  remarkable results. Based on Tree’s bestselling book of the same name, Emmy-award winning  nature documentarian David Allen’s Wilding is a charming, hopeful story of ecological  regeneration.

When they inherited the estate in the 1980s, Tree and Burrell attempted to modernise the farm, but it proved unsustainable. In a leap of faith, they let nature take back the land, surrendering contemporary preconceptions about landscape, agriculture and the husbandry traditional for historic estates. The scheme was the first of its kind in Britain and one of the most significant in Europe.

A beacon of hope for British wildlife, Knepp is now home to thriving flora and fauna of all kinds, while Tree and Burrell have evolved into dedicated conservationists – knowledgeable about the catastrophic loss of biodiversity in Britain, yet also hopeful that work like theirs can reverse the decline.

The Oil Machine explores our economic, historical and emotional entanglement with oil by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil. This invisible machine at the core of our economy and society now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil? By highlighting the complexities of how oil is embedded in our society — from high finance to cheap consumer goods — The Oil Machine brings together a wide range of voices from young activists, oil company executives, economists to pension fund managers and considers how this machine can be tamed, dismantled, or repurposed. We have five to ten years to control our oil addiction, and yet the licensing of new oil fields is seen to be in direct contradiction with the Paris Climate Agreement. The drama of global climate action is playing out in the fight over North Sea oil.
